Topps Mayo + Retail = MOJO?

Reader Joe M., like many other collectors, was not happy with Topps Mayo. Having purchased a box during the first week of release he knew that was it for him. That is when fate intervened.

Yesterday he received a call from a guy running a card show. Joe was asked if he wanted a table and knowing that there’d be plenty of set builders present he decided to go for it.

A few hours later Joe headed to his local retail outlet and picked up two blaster boxes of Mayo knowing he’d likely sell off any singles pulled. In his first box he found a 1/1 printing plate of John Elway but it was his second retail box that yielded some real Cardboard Gold.

In his second box Joe found a Cornelius Vanderbilt 1894 Subway token!

Not too shabby for a day of Retail wax…

I bought one blaster and pulled no mojo, but I have read many breaks of people pulling relics, autos, plates and coins. I will probably buy a few more blasters of Mayo. I also really like the base design.

It’s a great card, I mean don’t get wrong I’d love to have it. But why are more and more products including this kind of stuff? What does that have to do with football? It just seems like if they spent the money putting wooly mammoth DNA into the sets they would have more cash to get the big name players to sign.

I’ve gone through a lot, and do think retail Mayo for “hits” is just as good at a cheaper price. The thing I am seeing is if you are set collecting, you’ll never get it done in retail.

Huh, I didn’t know there were coin cards in this product at all… Topps has been putting these subway tokens into cards since the Subway series in 2000. Interesting, although the Elway plate is a MUCH better card than this.

I really want to like this product, but there are too many short prints to make it worthwhile to attempt to build a set. If it had come out a month earlier I would have bought a ton of it because I was so bored with the ’08 products, but right now ’09 Topps, American Heritage and Upper Deck are competing for my money and the next big purchase is Heritage so there’s nothing left for Mayo.

If in 2 or 3 months I can get a box for about $60 I’ll be all over it though.

I’m willing to bet the mammoth dna cost Topps less than 1 Pujols autograph.

There’s a website where you can purchase enough mammoth fur for 20 cards for about $25.

Odd. I pulled that same subway coin card about 20 minutes ago. I was more excited with the Marino mini #d to 25. Sometimes getting blasters for a pack rip fix pays off.

  7. Thomas says:

We’ve busted something like 30 blasters, gotten some amazing stuff, and the “SPs” are more than plentiful. I don’t understand how anyone could say you can’t build a set through retail. We were actually surprised when we saw this supposed SP list, because we have stacks of all of them.

  8. Bryan says:

I have reade that Mayo blasters have prodused some really nice hits.
I bought my second on Friday and pull a Rich Eisen auto #’d to 10.

Blasters are the way to go for Mayo! I’m having much better luck with them then I did buying the same number of packs form a box
