Man on the Street – 2009 Upper Deck

While Wax Heaven is technically “sponsored” by the two big companies, sometimes it takes a little longer than expected to received boxes for review. Thankfully, Shane, Wax Heaven’s ‘Man on the Street’ came through and bought four Hobby boxes to show some of the “hits” you might receive as an average, non-Beckettized collector.

Sure, Becket Media will get a “1 of 1″ dual autograph Ken Griffey/Derek Jeter… but for the rest of us, we’d be happy with a David Murphy autograph and a B.J Upton game-used relic. Oh, joy!

Below is the haul from the four boxes opened by Shane. If these were your four boxes, would you feel like you got your money’s worth? He paid just under $70 dollars for each one. I don’t know about you guys but judging from the box breaks I have seen, I’d stick to one box of this product.

As always, thumbnails lead to full-size scans.

I broke 2 boxes of this product and had similar pulls nothing overly exciting. I’m looking forward to the Topps Heritage release next week I’m going to buy atleast 2 boxes

  2. Paul says:

If you’re buying boxes of a base set for anything other than set-building, I think you’re doing it wrong. :)

  3. Bryan says:

I HAVE BOUGHT 2 HOBBY BOXES OF 09 UD AND GOT ZERO HITS IN BOTH OF THEM!!!!

  4. Mike T says:

I bought 5 packs of this at the local card shop and pulled a Big Papi triple swatch jersey card. I’m almost tempted to stop there. I want to put the set together, but I don’t want to get a pile of Documentary, 20th Anniversary, USA Team, Predictors and other junky inserts. I’d much rather have more base cards. I liked the inserts in Topps a lot more this year. I didn’t cringe when I pulled most of those.

  5. mfw13 says:

Whether or not you got your money’s worth depends on why you bought the product. If you bought it to try to make money you’ll have a very different opinion than if you bought it to try and build the set.

  6. Edwin says:

I’m not into set building but Paul is totally right.

  7. nexttopin says:

Overall, that’s not good for the price. But if it were me opening, I’d be flipping over the David Murphy. He’s currently my fave player.

  8. joe says:

$70/box is STEEP!!!!! Not to mention thats a rough 4 boxes for hits. But if you’re REALLY into it, hey, do what you do. I’m not a big UD fan, at least not for lower end box busting.

  9. matt says:

The guy at the local card shop said it took him 8(!) boxes to put a single set together, so I’m not sure this stuff is a good idea for anyone, really.

  10. beaverman3001 says:

    That was pretty terrible.

  11. Madyankees says:

Mike T, spot on man. I was like you hoping to put the base set together but I saw a few box breaks and I’m like ok i get around 60% set and a bunch of disgusting inserts. And I don’t even know how many boxes I need to break just to put the set together so I figured I do Topps instead….once the prices come down. Lol

  12. chemgod says:

Looks like about $20 worth of hits from $280 worth of product. Assume he can make one set from the boxes and add another $25. So to me, it looks like a $235 loss on it. Then again, it’s just my opinion.

  13. Jeff W says:

UD flagship is incredibly overpriced. I’m a set builder and it doesn’t come close to worth building through wax.

  14. Submarine Shane says:

    Hey All,
The Topps Series One (which is also a low-end product) was much better. I do not collect but I was able to put together a complete set of the Topps Series One from the 3 Jumbo boxes I opened. I think I am missing 3 to 4 cards for a set of the UD.
I think the Predictor, Historic Firsts, and 20th Anniversary insert cards are a total waste of cardboard and space…useless.
Chemgod hit the nail on the head…I had no other thought but to put all the relics and autos in a lot together and get rid of them. I will let you guys know what vast fortune is made from that lot….haha.
I bust wax for the fun of it. Its fun, exciting, and it keeps me out of Strip Joints. Most of time I don’t break even, but there is that rare occasion that I will hit something decent. That just makes the whole deal that much better.

More to come this week including a secret mystery wax break…?

    Later Gang,
    Submarine Shane-Man on the Street

  15. Paulb says:

I’ve heard of some collation problems with this product (see Chris at Stale Gum’s Review).

I’ll do what I always do, wait a year and buy it at a reduced price. Most products are not worth the initial price tag. You will occasionally get burned by waiting. But more often that not, the price will fall, rather than rise.
