BREAKING NEWS: Panini buys Donruss

Check out the exclusive details from The Sports Card File.

Donruss has been sold yet again. Gellman of Sports Cards Uncensored broke the news this morning while the “#1 authority” has yet to write anything on the matter. They are probably too busy making deals on Panini prices “behind the scenes”, if you know what I mean.

I can’t say I really care either way. Donruss products were so far from my radar the company might as well been called Razor but rumor is that Upper Deck’s baseball license will expire at the end of 2009 and it just might not be getting renewed.

It will be interesting to see when Beckett Media “breaks” the story.

  1. Drew says:

Doesn’t matter much to me about baseball cards but football cards next year for me will be a complete joke.

  2. beaverman3001 says:

    noooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo

I was so wanting Prime Cuts 5 :/

  3. Rob says:

Beckett broke news of the negotiations about 3 weeks ago, Prusha hinted at it right after it on The Card Podcast as well.

  4. Eric Slette says:

I just posted this on the Beckett baseball board… curious to see what the response will be, or if the topic will be approved at all

  5. dayf says:

Interesting… looks like Upper Deck just can’t catch a break.

  6. Gellman says:

Still nothing from either company or the douches at beckett. A nelson “Ha-ha” to them.

  7. CI says:

We broke it as well this morning. Will be interesting to see what happens in terms of releases, if Donruss will be allowed to make releases as usual, along with basketball ones, or if Panini is here to run the show, and focus solely on basketball. Perhaps we will see the return of Crown Royale?

  8. Submarine Shane says:

I must say this is making it much harder for the Man on the Street. I will still purchase my occasional boxes of 06 & 07 National Treasures, but I do not see me purchasing any new football product this year.
Thats too bad, Donruss made some really nice football cards. I am now wondering what the display at the National this year will look like. Maybe I should take my Uncle, he speaks Italian.

    Wow, Panini goin yard!

  10. Camermano says:

I don’t see why Panini would buy Donruss unless they wanted the brand for American releases. Perhaps MLB will add a third contract and shave down the number of sets Topps and UD can release. What would that do to product quality?

  11. mfw13 says:

Given what Steve said about McWilliam trying to sell UD, what are the odds that Pannini might now try to buy UD so as to gain access to the baseball and hockey card markets, thus becoming the only company besides Topps to have access to all four major sports?

  12. ToddUncommon says:

Headline: “Sticker Maker Buys Experienced Card Production Line Management Company”

The real story is what the Players’ Associations are going to do now that their former cash cow(s) are shrinking to a single cash baby calf. Despite its fanboys, nobody in terms of significant volume buys either NHL or NBA cards. I mean, sure, Upper Deck “sold out” of two years’ worth of Arena Football cards. Because…they didn’t make that many. Where’s the Arena League now?

The NHL and NBA are in for some serious, no-shit, re-think the entire business model in this money hemorrhage we call an economy. The stupidest thing that Panini can do is turn the crank, and make 10 products of NBA cards next year that nobody really wants, of players not that many people really jones for.

This market is ready to support THREE — yes, three — NBA products next year. One low, one mid, and one high end product. If they push it, maybe five products, max, by stoking the burn-out high end in the short term.

We will see if Panonruss will spend any time moving beyond recycled and uninspired card designs.

  13. Madyankees says:

Well as long as they don mess with baseball cards, i don really care. But I would like to see MLB change their licensing. Now you got 3 potential big card companies, I’m hoping license royalties are going to be paid on a per pdt launched basis with a CAP of maybe 10-12 pdts per company annually. As much as UD has disappointed me I hate to see it go down

  14. Paul says:

I hope things work out for the football & basketball fans, but I only collect baseball.

I’m curious about whether this will give Donruss/Panini a shot at taking an MLB license, but I don’t think we can support three companies each cranking out a dozen sets a year.

  15. Tim says:

    This will definitely be interesting.

  16. Joe from the D says:

Here’s my post in “Worst card of 2009″…

    Joe from the D (12:28:20) :

“Topps is putting the nails in their own coffin with this crap. They think that their shit doesn’t stink, and to the contrary, their shit wreaks to high Heaven. They don’t realize they are pushing collector’s out the door, and that money won’t be coming back. How can Topps expect people to drop $70 for a product where the big “hit” is a 1/1 sticker of an oversigning pitcher, and then ask the same people to spend $200 for a single pack of Sterling with 98% less cards per box and the same weak ass autograph?

Maybe Panini should muscle in on baseball too…”

So, who wants me to pick lottery numbers for them too?? lol

  17. Paul says:

http://www.hobbykings.com had this news back on 2/20 and it was funny to see the mix of reactions there. I think it will help the finished product.

  18. slette says:

Chris Olds locked my thread, and said it was all “hearsay.”
