Joe DiMaggio in Baseball Purgatory?

You know, for a guy who has never been into religion I have a pretty big fascination with Heaven, Hell, and Purgatory. In fact, the whole concept of Purgatory is something I am quite obsessed with. How cool is it that religion keeps souls in punishment after death until they are forgiven for their sins?

When I saw this 2009 SPx Joe DiMaggio on eBay and the almost painful look on the face of “Joltin’ Joe” I immediately thought that it looked like Baseball Purgatory. Just look at the almost fiery, ultra-bright background with an “X” behind Joe.

Maybe in Joe’s version of Purgatory he is stuck at home plate taking non-stop fastballs for 40,000 years and being forced by some evil spirit to swing, except each time the bat vibrates and hurts your hand. Now THAT is what I call eternal damnation.

If you’re a fan of Joe D., there’s lots to choose from in 2009 SPx. (LINK)

That is the look of realization… His purgatory is that he will forever be featured on cards like this…

I’ve ALWAYS hated cards like this. UD changed the hobby in so many ways, but perhaps most notably by emphasizing great photography. So this card and others, like the whole Spectrum family, is quite an anomoly. Hello 1991 Score Master Blasters!
