Looks like Jose Canseco was right once again. Manny Ramirez, one of the game’s greatest and most popular players, has finally been caught with his hand in the cookie jar.
Who could possibly be next? Ask Jose.
Source: The Los Angeles Times
Manny Ramirez has tested positive for performance-enhancing drugs and will be suspended 50 games starting today, The Times has learned.
The test result and suspension is expected to be announced later today.

Holy crap!!! You dropped a bomb on me!
I hope that I can put Manny on the DL in fantasy baseball.
When will Jose finally get a little credibility??
yes, he is a shell of his former self.
Yes, he continues to do questionable PR stunts.
Despite all of that, the man knows his roid users.
He has been 100% right when he names names. He knows what steroid use looks like and calls it out.
If MLB really wanted to do away with steroids, they would put Jose on their payroll.
3 fantasy teams and they all have Manny on them.
Another one bites the dust. After this, there isn’t a single name that would surprise me should anyone else test positive for PEDs. Not Griffey, not Pujols, not Jeter… We’ve now officially gotten to the point where your guilty until proven innocent, and I no longer think that’s an unfair way to view the sport.
Sad.
I think I just gained an edge in our match-up Dave
Funny thing I saw Sportscenter discussing Canseco claim and they quickly dismissed him saying he’s out to put his name out in public. Now Manny gets busted and didn’t even appeal it at all. Jose is right after all again.
Now here’s a pic we can put a caption on: http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_MIoxytYV2WI/SgMOAglUcWI/AAAAAAAAADk/UWPGRrmbBIk/s1600/mlb_a_ramirez1_sw_sq_300.jpg
Can’t say I was totally surprised. I need to find a replacement for my fantasy team too!
I wouldn’t so quickly call him a cheater. Supposedly he recently took a prescription which he didn’t know was banned under the drug policy. He’s passed numerous drug tests in the past.
….and Barry didn’t know what he was putting into his body.
All these guys were cheating in one way or another. At least some (Giambi) admitted to it.
Charlie – actually I don’t have Manny on my team that’s playing against you. I have him in another league.
We should be careful to jump to conclusions here. On MLB Network, they’re saying that it wasn’t a steroid that he tested positive for, and Manny is saying that it’s from something that was prescribed by his doctor. Whether that’s true or not, MLB should investigate that claim, and if a doctor really did prescribe whatever Manny tested positive for, he should not be suspended.
Apparently, the medication wasnt a steroid or HGH. I wouldnt necessarily say he is guilty of taking those things, but for this particular test, I dont think it was PEDs.
Are you surprised?
As a collector of baseball (and other) cards since 1976 I think I am going to call it quits. Not specifically because of Manny but that all news/opinion that comes out now undermines what we have as ever being worth anything again. That players are now anti-heroes doesn’t bode well for a resurgence of this hobby any time soon. I might still go to an occasional show, but I think I’ll put my money somewhere else.
According to a source in yahoo the performance enhancing drug was a sexual one.
This story is getting weirder by the minute.
http://sports.yahoo.com/mlb/news?slug=ys-ramirezsuspension050709&prov=yhoo&type=lgns
I always thought Manny was too much of a weirdo, butterfly chasing windowlicker to even do anything like this. Color me wrong!
I’m picturing next weeks sports headlines,
“Eckstein Tests Positive for Flintstones Vitamins!: ‘Pink Dinos were my favorite.’, exclaims disgraced World Series MVP”
I saw this one coming…. someone mentioned Griffey I know I’m partial but I would think he would have recovered from his injuries a hell of a lot sooner thus, breaking almost every record as a hitter in baseball history. I’m not saying it’s not possible I’m just hoping my last thread of baseball innocence does’nt get Broken. That would be a sad day for me. Grant old school pack buster
As far as that man woman I think he or she is just terrified at the decision she has to make between letting that beer go or get nailed by that 100mph foul ball coming at him or her whichever. Grant
If Manny Ramirez got suspended for 50 games for taking a doctor’s prescription to get his boner back, then the MLB steroid policy is officially a fucking joke. Note that the headline on the MLB home page is “Manny suspended 50 games for PED use”. Get your dick up medicine is technically a performance enhancer, but it has bugger all to do with steroids or baseball. It’s like putting someone on the sexual offender list for indecent exposure because they got caught whizzing behind the frat house during a party. However, the MLB has successfully brainwashed everyone into associating “Banned PED” with steroids so Manny wanting to get busy now makes him a juicer in everyone’s eyes. Bullshit. I’ve said it before, I’ll say it again, MLB owners purposefully looked the other way about steroids (if not outright encouraged it) in the first place to make lots of money, and now they are using it to their advantage in order to kneecap the union for the next collective bargaining agreement so they can pocket more money. The only person who should be suspended for PED abuse is Bud Selig.
I want to know the EXACT drug Manny tested positive with. If it’s not a steroid proven to actually enhance performance, then the MLB is full of shit.
What he took was in no way comparable to Viagra. What he took was HCG (human chorionic gonadotropin) which is very similar to Clomid. Both of these are fertility drugs which simply put; boost testosterone. Both are very commonly taken after a steroid cycle in order to get testosterone back up to normal levels after they drop off in succession with the end of the steroid’s use.
It’s almost like Manny is the new Rube Waddell in dreadlocks; a baseball savant that probably gets scared of quiet hybrid electric cards.
A-Rod should definitely dump whatever pathetically bad image-management firm he employs, and get the one that Manny uses. Give kudos to them for finding a novel excuse / dodge for positive drug tests that hasn’t been used before.
“I wasn’t cheating! I was only looking for some help to get into the batter’s box, know what I mean?”
Alan has it exactly right.
Gonadotrophins LH and HCG are both IMPLICITY and SPECIFICALLY listed by MLB as BANNED substances.
These are commonly taken by WOMEN to stimulate testosterone production, and aid in fertility.
99 times out of 100, when a man is taking these, it’s to do exactly what Alan said. NOT to treat ED.
Manny is a lying idiot, and so is his PR rep and his doctor.
The stuff he is accused of using is the same stuff Jose Canseco got busted with a few months back.
Jose was quitting steroids and tried to bring HCG across the border so he could bring his testosterone levels back to normal-after years of steroid use.
Looks like Manny was using undetectable steroids, decided to quit before getting caught and suffered the horrible side effect of not enough lead in the pencil. Hence taking a legal (except in MLB) testosterone booster to get things back to normal before anyone knew a thing.
Talk about bad timing for a drug test.
Viva Jose!
There is definitely something up with the MLB drug policy. I would love to see a list of every drug that is banned by MLB and what each of those drugs are prescribed for, and why MLB decided to put those on the banned list.
There is a tendency in these cases to assume everyone knows what they’re doing. In other words, to assume that MLB knows EXACTLY what drugs to ban and EXACTLY who is doing what and why they are doing it AND to assume that the players know EXACTLY what they’re taking and putting into their bodies and EXACTLY what those drugs are doing.
I have a feeling it’s much more muddled than that.
Oww, Manny wants a little manny in his oven. Cute!
i can’t believe this news… he just ended his career!
looks like Pujols is being investigated too…..
The hell? Manny was taking a female FERTILITY drug that boosts TESTOSTERONE?!?
What a dumbass! What doctor in his right mind would say that’s ok?? Ok, never mind my conspiratorial rant, Manny’s a (dumb) juicer.
Bud Selig is still a World Series canceling schmuck though.
Like Night Owl said. release the banned substances list and specify EXACTLY why everyone is suspended. You have to have transparency or else the whole mess turns Kafka.
Not manny, not manny. I still believe…
All I can say at this point, is that if I hear that invertebrate bean counter Bud Selig say that “the game has never been healthier” ONE more time, I will pray, every day, that the weasel gets hit by lightning someday.
Not kill him. Maybe leave a mark, though. Like Harry Potter, or Abel’s brother, Cain, Might even improve things a bit, and better than Photoshop can.
beckett says his cards will drop. they are rong theyyyy wilol duble mabe evn triplle!
Jose Canseco doesn’t deserve any credit. It’s easy to say that someone is “90%” using steroids…if you’re wrong, you blame the 10%. When you’re right, you say I told you so. So he has nothing to lose…and a lot of books/MMA fights/boxing fights/whatever else he is selling to sell!
Like he needs a fertility drug with 4 or 5 kids already. Sounds like a cover up perhaps.
The craziest thing about the entire Steroids scandal is that it never, ever would have happened had baseball let Jose hit his 500 home runs and enter the Hall of Fame.
Mark McGwire, Sammy Sosa, Barry Bonds, Manny Ramirez, Roger Clemens, Rafael Palmeiro…. all of them would still be sports heroes today.
and…………………………………alexrodreeeeegez
I do’t thinnk any of us want the game or our favorite players to be tainted. But jesus look at the guy all I think of when I see him is the FN Predator! with those deadlocks an all. It’s not that he got caught it’s how many times he did’nt! period.
for Manny’s case and everyone in his position, the “I didn’t know” excuse expired a long time ago
