Alright, this was definitely a tough break. The only two autographs came from guys who never made it or have years before they ever do.

As usual, the photography was bright & crisp. The O-Pee-Chee inserts were the real highlight of the box, which was mostly a dud in my eyes. Stay tuned for a review later in the week.

Pull a Tony Clark for me!

  2. Eric Slette says:

Pettitte is in Series 2, also??

Those “hits” were pretty brutal, although I’m really intrigued by the O-Pee-Chee cards. I’m guessing your hot box probably got sent to Dallas.

  3. JBob says:

Matt Riley? why even buy that back? Well at least you’ll have another ozzie canseco to track down the 20th aniversary edition.

  4. GrandCards says:

Of course the first freakin’ card is a Granderson now that I’m not the Directory recipient!

  5. Eric Slette says:

Hmmm, Pettitte is in Goudey and on those stupid 20th Anniversary cards… maybe I’ll wait to send out the SASE for a couple extra days.

  6. Olerudfan says:

    Mario,
Something for your readers to keep in mind, they will know instantly when it is a “hot box” by the inclusion or exclusion of the buyback topper.
I opened a box last week frome a freshly opened case at the same time as some others at the shop and people were was asking what I got in my topper. I was like “I didn’t get any topper” but my box was much better then the other three I saw i opened combined (hard to beat 14 autos and two GU in one box). This however should make those who hope to hit a “hot box” when they purchase of this product somewhat more cautious as this product now is essentially searchable. As always when opening wax people should make sure to buy from a trusted source.

  7. gobigpelf34 says:

Is the Pelfrey the same as series 1? card #256? Thanks for thinking of me by the way!

  8. Marie says:

Mario, I got your package the other day and I am going to send you back a bubble mailer for future cards. Sooz knows what you sent and said thanks.

I wanted to make sure I got Cano on the directory (at least I think I did).

I am not a fan of Series 2 if their definition of a “hit” is some no name kid that may or may not have a shot at the big leagues. Who wants to spend $80 a box, or $8 bucks for a hobby pack for a chance at a Team USA jersey. I’m done with my rant now.

Very interesting point OlerudFan… should be a caution to anyone picking up these boxes on eBay because I have been told similar stories with Triple Threads, meaning that they case hits are in the same location in each case leaving it virtually impossible to get one of those boxes on an eBay buy.

  9. kris says:

Wow, I’m glad Upper Deck decided to ignore Ramon Hernandez’s stay in Baltimore.

Who needs a current shot in a Reds Uniform anyways? Why not go all the way back to 2005 and put a picture of Hernandez as a Padre.

That’s actually pretty close to being ridiculous.

  10. chemgod says:

How funny I have the Riley card (when it first came out), wish UD bought it back from me!

  11. Peter says:

that’s good to know Olerud fan

  12. Mike says:

Wally Backman buyback…seriously? At the very least they should’ve had that thing auto’ed. Maybe it’s just me, but if I pulled a card from the the era of over production knowing I could have at least had another base card to help complete my Upper Deck 09 set I would be less than pleased.

Who else is lurking out there? Tommy Herr, Gregg Jeffries…?

  13. Justin G. says:

Wow, Matt Riley. Of all the failed O’s pitching prospects he was one of the best. I can only hope I pull a Rocky Coppinger or Brad Pennington.

  14. Tim H says:

If no one has claimed the Aj Griffin card can I claim it then?

  15. PunkRockPaint says:

I confused Matt Riley with Steve Belcher, the Orioles pitcher that died from (allegedly ephedra-related) heatstroke in 2003.

Well, I am glad Riley’s not dead. Something to be said for that.

  16. TSW says:

Re: Olerudfan: I think I’m sitting here in my office with a mostly sealed hot box right now.

I went to my local card stand this afternoon, and the vendor had a sealed box of UD Series 2. He opened it in front of me — no box topper. I bought one pack and pulled an auto/jersey of Kentrail Davis and a Joba Chamberlain O-Pee-Chee (which is really nice!). So of course I bought out the rest of the box.

    Pack two: Kendan Volz auto.

    14 sealed packs to go. I wish I had a video camera…

  17. TSW says:

    Definitely a hot box.

Pack 3: Tyler Lyons auto; Josh Hamilton O-Pee-Chee

Pack 4: Kentrail Davis auto (no jersey this time); Matt Holliday O-Pee-Chee

  18. TSW says:

If anyone’s interested, here’s the inserts results of my hot box. It’s a hell of a lot of fun to open one of these, but I don’t think I could make back the $80 price tag. That’s kind of sad from a “hot box.” If I only pulled 3 of these hits, as advertised, I’d be really disappointed.

    Inserts:

Team USA: AJ Griffin, Ryan Jackson, Matt den Dekker, Tyler Lyons

UD 20th Anniversary: Nolan Ryan, Orlando Cepeda, Chipper Jones, Robin Yount, Dallas Stars, Denver Broncos, San Antonio Spurs, New York Yankees

O-Pee-Chee: Mark Teixeira, Joba Chamberlain, Josh Hamilton, Matt Holliday (my favorite insert set in the product)

20th Anniversary Buyback: Geno Petralli (kinda cool despite Gino)

    And the “hits:”

Team USA autographs: Ryan Jackson, Christian Colon, Andrew Oliver, Kentrail Davis, Tyler Lyons, Kendal Volz

Inkredible autographs: Steve Holm, Gregorio Petit, Noah Lowry, Brandon Jones, Russ Ohlendorf

    UD Game Materials: Hank Blalock

Team USA Game Jersey: Andrew Oliver, Blake Smith

Team USA Game Jersey Autographs (#/225): Kentrail Davis, Mike Minor

  19. Eric E says:

You know, the whole 20th anniversary thing with Heritage and UD etc… Is getting annoying yet it is so neat how they did it. I hate how they did it to a 1966 card because that is a totally vintage card, but I understand why they did it; they want you to know that you got this out of a 2009 pack so if you’re on the buying end of the card on lets say… Oh ebay. You’re not totally getting ripped off. It is cool how they print it on there, you know when you got that card. Very mixed feelings about the whole buyback print thingy majig.

  20. Tommy says:

I bought my first “hot box” today was a little nervous to spend 80 bucks but thought what they hey o well. so i think i did pretty good Inserts:

Team USA: AJ Griffin, Ryan Jackson, Matt den Dekker, Tyler Lyons

UD 20th Anniversary: Nolan Ryan, Orlando Cepeda, Chipper Jones, Robin Yount, Dallas Stars, Denver Broncos, San Antonio Spurs, New York Yankees

O-Pee-Chee: Mark Teixeira, Joba Chamberlain, Josh Hamilton, Matt Holliday (my favorite insert set in the product)

20th Anniversary Buyback: Geno Petralli (kinda cool despite Gino)

    And the “hits:”

Team USA autographs: Hunter Morris,Micah Gibbs, Mike Minor, Kendal Volz, Derek Dietrich,

Inkredible autographs: J.A. Happ,Burke Badenhop,Michael Bourn, Ramon Hernandez, Gregorio Petit

    UD Game Materials: Yunel Escobar

Team USA Game Jersey: Ryan Lipkin

Team USA Game Jersey Autographs (#/225): Chris Hernandez, A.J. Griffn
And the my final card which was a big pull i think:

UD Game Materials Autograph (10/25)- Jason Bay
