Did you guys not run Kevin Gregg’s stats through Baseball Reference before accepting the Marlins trade last season? This is the same guy who converted just 29 of 38 save opportunities, blew 9 of them, and single-handedly killed the playoff hopes for the Fish in 2008.
Now Cubs fans are surprised that he has blown six games and might have just lost his closer’s role. Ironically enough, the Cubs are six games behind the St. Louis Cardinals in the Central Division. Can you imagine how different the Central would look if Gregg wasn’t such a terrible pitcher?
Just a warning for you guys; last season when Gregg lost his closer’s role after stinking it up he actually complained to the Miami Herald about riding the bench. He told them Florida should be utilizing him because it was ruining his trade value. Um Kevin, being the worst closer in baseball might have something to do with that.
Kerry Wood is having a good laugh right now…

Considering Kerry Wood is just as bad, if not worse than Kevin Gregg this year, I doubt he is doing too much laughing.
Well, except every time Wood looks at his bank account and realizes somebody paid him $10 mil/year to have a 4.71 ERA and a 75% save rate.
No, actually Kerry Wood isn’t having a good laugh. He’s too busy sucking eggs in Cleveland to be able to laugh. His 4.71 ERA is a full 1.5 runs higher than it was last year. Wood’s 15/20 ratio is actually worse than Gregg’s 23/29 save/blown save ratio.
Cleveland is on the hook for him for $20 million this year and next. Not giving into Wood’s contract demands is one of the few things Hendry actually did right in the past year. So Gregg might not be the answer, but it’s silly to say that this team would be better off with Wood.
Having personally witnessed Gregg pitch in Miami, I would pick ANYONE over him, even the overpaid Kerry Wood.
Bring back Bruce Sutter!!
As I said before, Gregg is only still around b/c of Hendry’s ego. He doesn’t want to admit that Gregg was a bad move so he’s still on the roster.
Hopefully at this point, he is below Aaron Heilman in the pecking order. Wow…you must REALLY suck to be behind Aaron Heilman!
It’s hard to think of a good move Jim Hendry’s made this season. Gregg, Bradley, Miles, giving up DeRosa… Meanwhile the Cardinals seem to be pushing all the right buttons. Add in a rash of key injuries and we’re where we’re at. And I hate to say it Wrigley Wax but Bruce Sutter didn’t win a championship until he went to the Cards. This is going to go down as one of the most frustrating years in a long series of frustrating years. I’m so depressed I could eat a dozen frosty malts.
i love carrie wood! i was at a game where the tigers were down by two and carrie came in and we won by three! it was awesome!
Maybe it’s time to put Dempster back in the closers role. Last season I would have said Marmol, but he walks the world when he’s in there.
Maybe we can pull out the wild card??
PS- Do you think the Marlins sent Gregg to Chicago to get back at the Cubs for basically stealing Derrek Lee?
david aarsdma is laughing too!
The Chicago fans aren’t surprised he sucks, most of us knew that already. It’s the management that is so surprised. I think it’s time they start looking at Samardzija as a possible closer, if not this year maybe next year. The Cub’s are just plain awful right now, if the Cards don’t run away with it now I’ll be surprised. Go Cubs!
The new Cub owners have to clean house with Hendry and Pinella, otherwise it’s 102 ans counting next year…….
Ugh… not this guy. Thank God the Angels got rid of him just in time. Phew.
even though wood’s stats are lower, he just got the major shaft as well. Victor Martinez and Cliff Lee dealt at the trading deadline. So much for leaving for an AL contender… oh well. I think that Wood’s stats would be much better at Wrigley and back in the NL… needless to say Kevin Gregg has been the fungus between my toes about once a week for the past 3 months… glad to see him gone
Agreed with gritz, we knew he sucked. And Wood was pretty decent last year, so who’s to say he wouldn’t be doing good again this year if he were still with the Cubs. Letting DeRosa go is still the worst fail for Hendry though. Gregg being the closer this long is Pinella’s fault. I’ll give Bradley a partial pass because of his OBP and because I bruise easily, but Miles sucks. No getting around that.
