Where Has My “1/1″ Gone?

For a short while back in 2007 I thought “1/1″ cards were the norm. After all, I managed to pull three in back to back boxes. My first two came from an overpriced box of 2007 Topps Finest, the next came from 2007 Topps Allen & Ginter. These boxes weren’t “loaded”, they all came from local card shops in my area.

By 2008 however, my luck had changed. I busted lots of boxes, paid by me and through sponsors and managed to pull just one. In 2009 I have busted almost every release in baseball and several other sports and have not pulled a single “1/1″. You would think by now I’d get just one but nothing.

Today I am expecting a sponsored package from Topps which will include a Hobby box of 2009 Topps Chrome. In case you’ve missed it, printing plates and Superfractors from this product have been selling like hotcakes. I am going to cross my fingers so that I may pull one of these cards, after all I have a tradition to uphold.

Every single 1/1 I’ve ever pulled has ended up in someone else’s collection, usually for free. I have been dying to hold a contest for a 1/1 but keep failing my readers. Hopefully today we can break this ugly cycle so that the readers of Wax Heaven may have an opportunity to win a “1/1″.

How many times have you pulled a “one of a kind” card?

I’ve never pulled a 1/1 card, but I don’t open very much product.

  2. zEphyr says:

This year only opened 1 product so far (Topps Series 1). Last years got a 1/1 Babe Ruth our of 2008 SPX box. Those Ruth 1/1′s where only the game stats on the front change from each card and make them a 1/1. They were pretty “common” though seeing the amount of those on the bay. Not busting a lot of wax lately but im interested in opening 1-2 more later this year.

  3. Kevin says:

    Same here, but I have a Towles ’09 1/1

  4. Drew says:

    Never, I wish though

  5. Joe from the D says:

I’ve pulled 3 “legit” 1/1′s. A Nick Johnson dual bat from 2005 Diamond Kings, a Ryan Zimmerman silver hyper plaid from 2007 Co-Signers, and a Brett Favre superfractor from 2008 Topps Chrome Football.

On a different note, I’ve almost bought several boxes that contained 1/1′s, most noteable being 2008 Topps Sterling. I was at a show in Toledo, OH. Picked up one box, didnt like the “vibe” it gave me, and put it down in favor of the one right next to it. That box I purchased contained a Duke Snider auto/quad relic #’d 10/10. What about the box I put down, you ask? Well, It just so happened to contain a Mickey Mantle Cut auto/8 piece relic booklet which sold on Ebay not too long about for $8000.

    I got $40 for the Snider…

  6. Mike says:

I’ve pulled 4 1/1′s in my time. A Bonds relic/auto from the first year of Sterling, an ARod Triple Threads relic, a John Smoltz jersey from Topps Contemporary and a Yount jersey/auto from 2005 UD HOF.

I just remembered that I pulled a 1/1 Topps sketch card from 2009.

It left my hands in a contest. So I guess I did this already.

Oh well, still want to pull another for you guys.

Once………………..2008 Bowman Chrome magenta Printing Plate of Peavy

  8. i’ve pulled 4-5 1/1 cards. the most valuable card was the willie mays 1/1 cut auto from 2004 topps tribute cut sig. edition.

what are you talking about not having a contest for a 1/1? I won the ryan howard sketch card a few months back and its a 1/1. still have it too. its a nice addition to my phillies collection.

  9. Tim says:

I’ve never pulled a 1/1, and I only have 1 1/1 in my collection, a 2000 Stadium Club plate that was given to me by another collector.

I’ve never seen a superfractor in person and probably never will.

  10. Joe from the D says:

Although they’re actually 1/1′s, there’s just SOOOOOO many of those sketch cards out there to remember that they are 1/1.

I totally forgot about that card too, Mario.

  11. slette says:

I’ve never, ever pulled a 1/1, which I suppose isn’t entirely shocking, considering how few boxes I buy. The only 1/1 I even have in my collection is a blank-back A&G I bought off eBay from the Topps Vault.

Here’s hoping you pull a (Pettitte) Superfractor or plate!

  12. Nick T says:

I got a Longo Allen and Ginter plate this year and a Jose Ceda printing plate this year.

  13. calicokidcards says:

I had some luck. This year, I pulled a Roy Halladay 2009 A&G Wood Mini. I sold it on ebay for $151 (I was surprised, bought 3 boxes of Topps Chrome with the money). A few months back, I pulled a Walter Johnson Masterpeice from a box of 2007. Sold that on ebay for more then what I bought the box for ($42).

Last summer, they has a box break at a local store for TriStar. From the same pack of 200 projections, I got 3 1/1′s. Olbrychowski (Yankee) purple 1/1, two printing plates – Elio DeLaRosa and Ty Weeden. Still have them.

A Webb printing plate from 2005 Bowman, about 2 yeras back.

  14. platypus says:

ive pulled a maris foldout 8 piece 1/1 from sterling, a white whale triple patch auto of daric barton from triple threads, a printing plate of jeff baisley from finest and a printing plate of some prospect named hamilton from bowman sterling.

  15. Brian says:

I pulled a 2000 Fleer Focus Masterpiece 1/1 Purple Shawn Green. I sold it on EBAY for between $300-$350.

  16. Offy says:

The only 1/1 that I’ve ever pulled was from a box of Marvel Masterpieces and those are one per box so it’s not that big of a deal. With my luck, if I ever do pull a 1/1 it will be a lame printing plate. Gee, you put your trash into a card and slapped a 1/1 on this backwards picture of a player. Thanks, but no thanks.

  17. topher says:

Last year I pulled a Frank Thomas cyan plate out of a box of ’08 Finest. Sold it on the bay for $100. I know, right?

  18. dean a beckstein says:

I have only pulled two- and they both came from the same box. It was a box of 2008 Bowman chrome football and I got the Anquan Boldin black printing plate and the Travis henry superfractor.

  19. ToddUncommon says:

So far, I’ve never pulled a 1/1 out of a product that would actually support any declaration of “zOMGmojorb!”.

I’ve pulled non-awesome 1/1 out of stuff like UD Premier; nothing remarkable. As for the best pulls overall, I have had 1/10 and 1/6 before out of lower-end and mass-market product (e.g., Topps Football, Topps Rookie Cup). Back in ’05, I pulled an Alex Smith Topps Football Rookie Premiere red pen “Happy 50th” inscribed numbered to 10.

As he was the top draft pick that year, that was a pretty big deal at the time. Too bad he stinks up Candlestick these days, and that takes quite a bit to do to that dump.

  20. David Joseph Smith says:

I was at my local card store and there was one box left from a 2007 Triple Threads case. The owner told me that everyone who had bought from the case had ripped open the box in the store. No one had pulled a 1/1 White Whale. He thought there might be one in the last box. I bought it. There was a 1/1 Alex Rodriguez autographed Cyan Plate White Whale. I’ll never sell it.

  21. houstoncollector says:

I’ve pulled 1, from 2008 Moments and MIlestones of Grady Sizemore, since sold.

I’ve bought two printing plates from eBay, however, as well as a 1/1 from 2008 Triple Threads (base parallel). A handful of /5s as well. Lowest other card I’ve pulled has been /25 though.

  22. houstoncollector says:

    I lied. I pulled a /10 AU/GU once. Of Matt Leinart. Whee.

  23. ibleedbrooklyn says:

IM SURE YOU REMEMBER MY 2008 TOPPS CHROME ICHIRO SUZUKI TRADING CARD HISTORY SUPERFRACTOR =)
MOST BEAUTIFUL CARD IVE EVER SEEN

  24. I’ve pulled two true 1/1s, both of which were autographs (that I later let go): an Adam Everett and a George Brett, which was featured on TCC and even Beckett. Kinda wish I had that one back…

  25. jesse says:

    just 1. a mike moose-tacos pre-rookie printing plate.

not really a true 1/1 IMO… these days most 1/1s are unique, but just a parallel or plate.

  26. Max J. says:

in my first hobby box i pulled to printing plates in the same pack. i havent pulled one since

  27. Mike Newman says:

from a jumbo pack of 2007 topps updates and highlights i pulled a Tony Armas Jr. printing plate

  28. dayf says:

    I got one of those 1/1s :)
The only 1/1 I’ve ever pulled was a J.C Romero printing plqate out of a box of Topps Total. I tried my luck with a few packs of Moments & Milestones but struck out on the easy 1/1s.

  29. fuji says:

I’ve a total of 7… however… 6 of them are of those Archie sketch cards that come 1 per pack, so that’s kind of cheating. Actually, if you consider all sketch cards to be 1/1, then I’ve pulled a total of 13, because I also pulled 6 more sketch cards out of Star Wars Heritage boxes.

The only sports card 1/1 I’ve pulled is a Jordan 1/1 printing plate out of Topps Signature basketball. Unfortunately it was DeAndre, instead of Michael.

  30. jesse says:

correction on my post- I meant are NOT unique…
