In case you’ve been away from Earth recently, you probably know that Senator Ted Kennedy passed away last week. As is usually the case when someone very hated dies (see Michael Jackson), mostly everyone decided to focus on the good Teddy had done in his life.
Weeks before his death, Upper Deck released a Kennedy trading card in their Philadelphia Football release. It’s currently selling for about $3-$5 dollars on the secondary market.
Topps, knowing when to cash in on a good story released their own Ted Kennedy card by way of the struggling eTopps brand. The card, which has a print run of 999, will be available on September 7th.
Given the option of just one card, which would you choose?

Ted kennedy is hated?!???!??!?!??!
I personally did not hate him but in certain political circles he was loathed by many.

Well those are extremeley right wing- democrat haters. I personally think he was a truley amazing man that helped the world alot.
Is eTopps still fledgling? It came out in 2000.
Skoormit,
Thanks for that, I meant struggling.
Ah, struggling. That I wouldn’t know. I bought some of the inaugural set, but haven’t paid much attention since. That said, the Kennedy card looks nice enough, but it does smack of profiteering.
Does this mean they’re going to have a Teddy/Mary Jo Kopechne dual cut auto?
I really like that Upper Deck one. Very cool and memorable.
I like the Etopps one, but the Upper Deck one is kinda interesting as well.
ted kennedy allen and ginter by far is the best. I just wish they wouldn’t crudely profit on his death but rather randomly insert it in a later topps product like maybe Updates and Highlights.
I’ve already tried and failed at the eTopps game and I don’t plan to try again.
As for the ‘hated Ted Kennedy’ thing, Americans are just hateful people. We’ll just hate people on general principle. Seriously, people hate Mother Teresa, we’ll hate anybody in this country.
I really like the Philadelphia card – it shows him in his prime.
Also, I don’t think many people really hated him. Did you see how many Republicans spoke at his memorial service?
national chicle all the way… classic. There are cards of John and Bobby as well to go with Ted… I want all 3!
Well, to his credit, he did leave a girl to drown to death in the middle of the night, _in a car he drove into the lake (possibly under the influence, but who knows since he ran home insted of alrting authorities)) and tried to hide it the next day. So I can understand why the average American disliked him. And I for one will not buy a card of the man. The Red Sox jacket is reason enough however.

Whoops sorry for the mispellings.
He was the stereotypical politician. Rich, elitist, power hungry, and above the law. Even though I didnt hate the guy, I dont get why so many loved him. I’d take the Upperdeck, didnt even know they still did the whole etopps thing anymore!
would everyone just stop shittalking a dead person for one minute please??
Keep in mind that the eTopps one is also branded as an A&G, but with the eTopps refractor-y type finish. As usual, the promotional image (nor scans) do the product justice, regardless of subject.
I think the Philadelphia version is pretty flat and boring. I’d take the ol’ Teddy Magic Levitating Ball Trick card out of the two.
As for hate, it clearly runs in all directions. I particularly didn’t care for Ted, but he never earned hate, at least not from me. It is interesting to see how quickly some people, all up and down the spectrum, froth at the mouth about some personality or topic.
Many progressives like to profess they’re above hating, but just mention W, or Rove, or Cheney to some of them, and they still go off their nut, too. Of course, from their POV, it’s not hate, it’s “righteous anger”, just like conservatives claim to have. At that point, you have to look at the principle beyond the person, to see whether their righteous anger is meaningful, or self-centered crap.
As a New Englander, a Bostonian, and a resident of Mission Hill (I live a block away from the church Teddy’s funeral was at) I was on the eTopps website right at 4pm when they went on sale.
The eTopps A&G card is definitely the better of the two. If you haven’t seen one of these eTopps A&G cards redeemed, look one up on ebay. First off, every eTopps card is encased in the Topps uncirculated case. And as Todd said, these cards have a beautiful reflective (not chrome) finish.
I think the eTopps brand is underrated. As a team collector I would gladly welcome eTopps cards of my teams into my collection. I don’t necessarily like the cost and the idea of companies selling singles in this manner (I think that is honestly the future of cards), but the cards themselves are great in my opinion.
No hate for the guy, although if anyone else had killed that woman the way he did, they’d still probably be in jail. Instead, he gives a speech saying he’s sorry, and he’s a free man.
As a politician (Republican), I can acknowledge the good he did for the country without flinching.
Oops, I misspoke – I’m not a politician, but instead a person who follows politics. Not sure how smelly a brain fart I had to cut to type that one… good job, Eric.
Either would make great targets at the shooting range
