No, I’m not talking about cheerleader cards.
Check out this Shadow Box insert from the upcoming SPx Football release. The card you see below is seeded just once per case and considering the fact that SPx Hobby boxes are pre-selling for close to $170 dollars, odds are this will be a must-have for football collectors.
Upper Deck has also included signed Shadow Box cards but won’t divulge the seeding rates. One thing is for sure, collectors have never seen any technology on this level. Upper Deck’s Facebook account claims the ultra-thick cards give off a “three dimensional imagery”.
An early checklist of 2009 SPx Football shows 39 different Shadow Box cards from players such as Adrian Peterson (pictured), Tony Romo, Chris Wells, Eli & Payton Manning, Jerry Rice, and Tom Brady to name just a few. I could not find any information on which are signed or if all 39 had signed versions.
Stay tuned to Wax Heaven for a possible Shadow Box-related contest next week!

best ever? why not. it looks amazing.
that one is going to be worth a pretty penny
thats a great looking card.
I can’t wait to see one in person
when do they come out?
Wicked card!!!!
I’ve been looking at these trying to figure out what exactly’s going on. Is it an actual shadow box or is it a shadow box using solely visual effects?
I dont really like the GU’s and what not in SPX, they always seem cheesey. However, this does seem like the kind of card you’d have to hold in your hand to really appreciate.
I’ll definitely be purchasing the worst on the checklist just to check ‘er out.
I would expect UD to eventually make a $100 per pack set out of these. 100 cards, $100 per pack, 1 base card like the AP above and some type of Auto/GU.
Are these really any better than Sportflix?
That’s all I need as far as 3-D cards go.
Um, these look super awesome. Can’t wait to see more scans/pics. I think this is the direction companies need to start going, instead of more game used crap. Give me a little art, and a little technology. Hopefully they’ll be coming to baseball soon, since I’m not that into football (yet).
I’ve got to agree with Beardy. One of the reasons that so many people remember cards from the 90s so fondly is that card companies didn’t fall back on a bunch of sticker auto and white swatch cards that all generally look the same. Companies actually did different things with cards to try and wow collectors. Some things were awesome such as Dufex and Chrome while other things didn’t go over so well. Card companies need to start getting innovative again and make people want cards because they look good and not just because they are 1/1. Are there really people out there that like the way that printing plate cards look?
Beanie Wells? One of these things is not like the others. One of these things just doesn’t belong.
same here beardy. I hope for less GU and this kind of stuff transferring to baseball.
PLEASE UPPER DECK- you have already came up with the cool concept, can you make it with baseball too? seems like UD hockey is far better always and baseball is at the bottom. either way some awesome changes going, hopefully they will be doing less GU as well
Im guessing these will be part card, part plexiglass, and SUPER thick. You should have a cardstock back and an acetate front. Should be awesome, even moreso when signed.
I’m going to be getting a ((purposely) damaged sample. I’ll make a YouTube video showing it off and then will give it away if someone wants it.
wait… I forgot, there were also crusades for football… so this could just be top dog for the decade.
still awesome, cant wait to see what yours looks like M
Ditto on the less GU, more inventive artwork and stuff. One of my favorite inserts from the 90′s was the 96(?) Fleer Ultra Prime Leather cards. They tried to make the card seem as though it was made out of glove leather or something like that. Cool looking cards. Also those Fleer Ultra Season Crowns that were transparent, with artwork making them look like they were die cut. I think those were 96 Ultra also…. anyway…
So clearly, the designers for the baseball line are in the basement huffing paint and breathing in carbon monoxide and the football line guys are in the penthouse breathing fresh air.
God forbid Topps put quite possibly the highest ceiling rookie in the draft in a pack of superstars. A 240lb back that’s run multiple times of 4.4 and under. It’s unfortunate he’s got an “injury history”.
You know, some people still like rookie cards. I’m sure a 2008 Matt Ryan one of these would fetch a pretty penny. If you’d look at Beanie and Ryan side-by-side entering the draft and threw out injuries, Beanie would grade out higher.
Yah, Beanie’s not a superstar yet, but rookie cards are still pretty gosh-darn valuable.
For me, creative/good looking inserts would be the best replacement to the boring game-used card. I would much rather pull/buy something like that than a no-name relic. But at the rate that those cards are going to be seeded, I would suspect the price on the secondary market will be untouchable for me and most of you.
Mario
Why is your sample purposely damaged?
J….
In a word yes. I still don’t understand why he went so low in the draft.
“Super Thick”? “Shadow Box”? Sounds like something Fleer E-X did back in the ’90s.
I’m not saying this a bad thing… maybe UD is finally listening to you!
It does look pretty cool. Hopefully everyone else won’t try to copy it and turn it into the next gimmick…
Mojo,
I was told the card has a hole punched through it. My guess is that they did it to keep the card from getting backdoored and sold on eBay before the product is released.
any word if these are serial #’d or what the print run is? if they’re 1/case, there cant be a whole lot of ‘em produced.
but then again, if you look at the history of INSERTS the past few years, stuff that falls 1:188 packs books for next to nothing ($20 or less), considering how tough of a pull it is.
I guess only time will tell what these are “worth”.
I really, really like the idea of focusing back on valuable, well-designed inserts again, if it’ll slow the oversaturation of the g/u releases. Enough truly is enough.
If said hole-punched card is an Adrian Peterson or Percy Harvin, I’d love to bribe you.
Beanie Wells doesn’t have a high ceiling. He’s going to be a starter for a couple years, then a backup, then out of football. He’s the next Kevin Jones. The only reason he gets any attention at all is because of the Bucknut droolers.
He had a high ceiling when he was a freshman. Then he went on to do absolutely nothing with his college career, racked up a bunch of injuries, and got drafted based on where he went to school and his 40 time. He doesn’t belong with a bunch of superstars in an insert set.
It reminds me of one of the cards I’ve been after for years for my Cade McNown collection. It’s a Donruss Elite dual auto of Aikman and McNown. What a waste of an Aikman auto. It’s one of the cheapest Aikman autos you can get, because it’s soiled by having that loser on the other side. Same thing with this. Super-rare insert set, should sell for a pretty penny, and someone is going to have to pay good money for a card of a loser like Beanie Wells.
When I saw it I immedietly thought of 1997 Fleer E-X release. That was another of my favorite sets from a strong 1997 year.
Just pulled a Peyton Manning Shadow Box (No Auto). I can’t find anything in Beckett or Ebay to tell me the value. Thick friggin card. Not sure if there is a screw down thick enough to hold it. Very cool card though. No Serial number either. Hard to know how rare it is.
so you know.. I did pull a AUTO Tony Romo Shadowbox in Buffalo, NY
