When Upper Deck informed Wax Heaven that there was no delay with Goodwin Champions, they were not kidding. Singles from the much-anticipated retro-themed product have begun to hit eBay. No autographs or relics have hit the auction site as of yet.
You can expect two Hobby box breaks from Mr. Scott of The Wax Report next week as well as a full review later in the month. From the little I have seen so far, this may be the only product that has the chance to dethrone this year’s fabulous Allen & Ginter release

Ugh, and me still broke. I got nine bucks and change in my pocket, maybe I can find a couple packs somewhere…
Wow, it’s not out on time – it’ s out early!
Kinda wishing I hadn’t bought a box of Chrome Football today now!
How many artsy retro-themed sets do we need exactly?
Charlie,
This is only UD’s second of the year unless I am forgetting one.
2 for baseball, but a whole lot more when u tie in Philadelphia, Champs, Timeline, SP rookies, OPC hockey 81 insert set, OPC baseball, Goudey, Goodwin. I wouldnt be surprised if there were more. Seems UD is as guilty as Topps of rehashing designs. I like a few I have to admit.
Shut your mouths, these retros are beautiful! You guys can have your chrome, shiny gimmickry, I’ll take painting and classy designs every day of the week and twice on Sundays!
Of course, just like every other product, it will be prohibitively expensive to try and build the set by ripping wax. With the base set being 150 cards, you’re looking at at a minimum of two boxes at $60-70 each just to complete the base set, never mind the SP’s and super SP’s.
Thankfully, most of the SP’s and super SP’s are minor players, so I’m guessing a lot of collectors (like me) will simply buy the base set on Ebay for $30-40 and forget about the SP’s.
It’s a nice set, but certainly not worth paying 60-70 cents a card for at retail.
classy designs? It looks like Ted Williams was super imposed into the intro credits from The Simpsons!
I’m not a retro guy. Never have been, never will be. I like my shiny stuff. If I wanted stuff that looked old, I’d buy the ORIGINAL. Enough is enough with throw back sets…
Nice! I don’t think I’ll be purchasing a box but I’m assuming hobby packs will be in the $4-$5 range? Which means I’ll add the occasional pack to my hauls at the ol’ card shop.
This may be the last baseball set I put together this year.
I think it looks great.
Are they in hobby stores or Target yet?
I agree with Jeff W
As my boy Tom Waddle would say, I love me some retro sets. Having said that, I dont like this set at all. When the first four pics came out i thought it’d be great, but now that it’s out, not so much.
It’s hit and miss on any given card, but that’s with ALL sets. For instance, the Williams and Lee above are kinda so-so. Ok so the Ted is just ok and the Lee is horrid. Have you gone onto Ebay and checked out the Jeter, Ripken, or Ichiro? BEAUTIFUL CARDS
i prefer obak.
for all the retro theme haters out there, just let it go. Enjoy what you like and that’s that.
Charlie,
We need one artsy-themed retro set for every two over-designed, foil-filled, modern sets.
Seriously, though….the reason many collectors like myself find retro sets appealling is not because they are retro, per se, but because they are the only sets out there which feature simple and well-designed cards with good large photographs.
If manufacturers showed any inclination to produce well designed “modern” sets with good photography, we’d be just as enthusiastic about them as we are about retro sets.
But name me a single non-retro set that:
a) has no chrome
b) has no foil
c) has legible player and team names
d) has good photography
