A couple of weeks ago I blogged about my desire to give away a 1/1 card. Unfortunately, despite my early success in pulling the elusive cards in 2007, I’ve only pulled one in over a year and gave it away long ago in a previous contest.
Well, it appears Upper Deck was reading because they have sent a handful of 1/1 printing plates which I will exclusive give away at Wax Heaven over the next month starting this weekend. The first contest starts on Saturday and it’s for two Yankees plates, one featuring Derek Jeter and the other Joe Torre.
I haven’t yet decided on how to give away the plates so if you have any suggestions by all means leave a comment here, on Twitter, Facebook, or through my personal e-mail. All I know for sure is you will need a WordPress account (FREE) with an avatar to participate.
Looking forward to hearing your suggestions.

I DO
How about who ever sends you a nice selection of Cansecos (including some autos) that you need
make it a sports card triva question
The problem with trivia is that you can Google the answer in seconds.
How about 6 degrees if Jose canseco
Whoever is closest to the actual final score of the Florida vs. Tennessee game on Saturday.
Randomness is good. Getting cards to people who would appreciate them is better.
You know who clamours for Yankees and who goes after Jeter based on what you give away. Pick a few deserving candidates, come up with a little spiel for each of them, and let people vote on them.
my idea- whoever correctly picks the ALDS/NLDS
not only how many games, but which game which team wins.
ex-
NYY- DET
1.NY 2.DET 3.NY 4.DET 5DET
BOS-LAA
1.BOS 2.LA 3.LA 4.LA
donno, just a way for people to use their minds and not google.
or, you would have people predict jeters stateline for the remainder of the season

Did UD ever tell you why this wasn’t inserted into a product? Stuff like this bugs me more than Beckett getting to bust a case of Exquisite.
This essentially shows that they’re cherry picking what goes into products and what stays out of products.
I’m all for free stuff and have benefited from it before, but once you start giving away 1/1s it gets a bit shady in my books.
This opens up a pandora’s box of possibilities: Eg. Handfuls of amazing cards are cherry-picked and given to valued customers ( Hobby shops that buy more than X dollars).
I think it’d be even worse if this were a spare black plate of Jeter, as there’s already plenty of ways they get away with making ridiculously similar 1/1s. If I were the guy that pulled a 1/1 Jeter Plate and your contest winner just happened to list this very plate at the same time I listed mine — I’d lose my head.
Kris, I will ask why it wasn’t inserted into products tomorrow morning.
I agree with the Hamiltonian. Make the contest something exlcusive to Jeter collectors or Yankees fans and do the same with the other plates as well.
Mario wants to start the contest on Saturday so the playoff game is a FAIL. How about we pick the winner of every NFL contest this wknd and the one with most wins and most losses, wins. You can use total score of MONDAY NITE game 2 be a tiebreaker.
jamoke, do you play pickem football anywhere?
I went 13/16 in week 1..
I would be down for doing that here, but it seems like baseball related might be the best bet
Good for Upper Deck. Who cares where they came from. I shall purchase one (1) pack of Goodwin Champions as soon as I can spare 15 minutes to go to a hobby shop to thank them for their selfless deed.
i imagine it wasn’t inserted into products because UD probably had to hold back some make goods for manufacturing packout errors.
I’ll pass on the Stankee card contest because i”m sure people will be ticked that I’d flip them, any other teams involved and I’d be game for the contest.
That notdayf guy is right. I shall buy a pack too to show my solidarity for the guy who is not me.
Wow that would be a great addition to my 600+ Jeter Card Collection.
You guys can have the Jeter. I collect Torre!

I like jesse’s idea, but that might take too long! How about pick a game, like giants/rockies and have people predict the final score or something like that.
yeah, just the score of one game would be good. … tiebreaker could be hits and errors.
Simply picking the final score of a baseball game does not have enough variables to work. Mario has far too many readers who would enter the contest. Perhaps just another pick a number/random DOT org contest. Still like football pickem.
“apples to apples” style question and answer contest
I agree with the Hamiltonian – make a contest specifically for Yankee collectors… perhaps an essay contest? Why this card would highlight their collection, the centerpieces of their Yankee collection, etc.
Please bear in mind, I suggest this because I have never owned a 1/1, and am selfishly in favor of shrinking the playing field. Then again, Sox fans would probably be happy knowing I wouldn’t be in the running for a 1/1 Boston card.
Regardless, I’m looking forward to seeing what you come up with!
how about a contest where people send in nude pics of their wives or girlfriends… if they’re hot.
Best pics win the 1/1 plate.
Bryan, if this were a Papelbon contest that’d be the best idea ever!
1 of 1′s are a pain in the ass to win on ebay, let alone pull one out of the pack. Obviously it should go to a Jeter fan, but an essay contest reeks of having to read 100,000 words from 100 different entrants.
Here’s my idea.
Pick a random Jeter card, a fairly common card, but something you probably wouldn’t own if you weren’t a Jeter / Yankee fan. Something that you can replace for under 10 bucks on eBay. Realistically, you could make it all Jeter GUs.
Pick a random day at 8 in the morning and tell everyone to mail you a common Jeter GU, and a self addressed stamped envelope.
The envelope must be postmarked TODAY, if it’s not don’t bother mailing it. Basically, people can’t win ‘em on ebay and mail them to you. If someone wants to run out to their hobby shop to buy one — well, whatever.
Wait a week, collect all the entries and do a random drawing.
Mail all the cards back in their self addressed stamped envelope, and include the Jeter Plate in one of them.
Some people are probably going to complain about lost cards, but that’s the point of picking a card you can replace for under 10 bucks.
Kris,
Here is Upper Deck’ response to your concern:
We produced some one-of-one printing plate cards of the 20th Anniversary set to use strictly as promotional pieces to help promote the set. We have used them with media and for online contests, but we have primarily been using them with hobby shops that host Upper Deck Tailgate Parties around new releases. We are holding close to 25 Upper Deck Tailgate parties this month alone at hobby shops throughout the US around the releases of 2009 MLB Goodwin Champions, 2009-10 NBA Upper Deck and 2009 NFL SPx. We provide shops with some of these cards, unopened product, hats, t-shirts and memorabilia to use as prizes. We even give them gift certificates to provide customers with pizza and soft drinks at the event. I hope that helps.
Mario maybe use this as a question after Jeter and A-Rod thats if A-Rod retires with the yankees numbers 1-13 will all be retired except for what numbers and than name all the players with the yankees that have there jersey number retired. Numbered 1-13
Just putting it out there?
Yah, that’s what I sort of figured. How do you interpret that though? Like, you don’t exactly produce printing plates, other than adding a sticker. Reading that doesn’t exactly answer if there are multiple 1-of-1 black plates, or that they just cherry picked out what they wanted.
It is part of the 20th anniversary collection, so no promises are really being broken.
I’m glad they’re very responsive though.
