The Value of Brett Favre?

Author: Austin Cassidy

I miss the days when the worst thing you could say about Brett Favre was that the couldn’t make up his mind. I long for the time before I’d seen Brett Favre’s penis and heard his desperately creepy voice mails. His constant waffling between retirement and continuing his NFL career was annoying back then, but now those seem like such innocent days.

After last night’s pathetic performance against the Jets, the Vikings dropped to 1-3.  That’s hardly the kind of start Brett Favre wanted or expected when he agreed to fly back to Minnesota in August.

Unlike Tiger Woods, who could destroy his public reputation and still have several decades of top-level play to rebuild his career and image, Favre basically has got to be in his last or next to last season.  This is it for him.  There are no 50-year old quarterbacks in the NFL.

So what are your thoughts on Favre and his collectibility in light of this very embarrassing scandal?

  1. I feel sorry for Deana. Growing up in Wisconsin you realize how small of a place it is and going to college I knew lots of people from Green Bay who would tell stories of seeing Favre out at the night clubs, remember Green Bay is tiny compared to other NFL team cities, and the stories of his carousing. It was Reggie White who kinda calmed him down and made him see the light about marrying Deana and being a father to his kid. All I can say is I’m glad this is after he left Green Bay.

Word on ESPN is that the Vikings are reevaluating their short yardage and 3-TE sets. Apparently, Brett’s not that familiar with the jumbo package.

Seriously though, I own a few Favre memorabilia cards and I’m thinking of selling them off on ebay while people still care.

Football greats really only retain big value when they go out well respected and they stay visible by coaching, commentating or endorsing things. Favre’s cock shots make him toxic for endorsements. His career is dead in the water. And once his wife (who had CANCER at the time!) leaves him, it’ll just get sad and pathetic.

Stick a fork in this once great player.

I’d say Tiger was worse but neither should be proud of their actions.

Favre was my favorite player for over 15 years… and if he still was a Packer, I’d still be a fan of his “on the field” performance. However his issues “off the field” are both embarrassing and disappointing.

If all of these allegations are true, then I feel sorry for his wife, children, and the rest of the Favre family. I understand that nobody’s perfect and that people make mistakes… but somethings are unforgivable in my book. “Infidelity” would be one of them. Then again, I’m not the one married to the guy. If Mrs. Favre and the family are willing to forgive him… then that’s all that really matters.

As a collector… I’m sure this will cost him some fans. I’m not one of them. I’ve never idolized him… and I never will. I’ve collected him because of what he has done for the Packer organization. I’ll never buy a card of him as a Viking… nor am I a fan of him right now (because he’s a Viking)… but when he retires and enters the Packer HOF… I’ll support him and appreciate his effort (on the field).

In short… my Favre PC isn’t going anywhere.

In short, Football isnt like Baseball or Golf, and Favre is the Babe Ruth and Tiger of both. Unless he criminally injures, destroys something, or hurts an animal, he will be fine once all is said and done.

Until the proof is in the pudding, it’s all speculation. I have followed Favre since 1993, and tell me that no one else has ever tried to see if they could turn someones eye. Favre is human, and human nature is nothing new, it’s the media that turns things into armagedon.

Makes me glad that I lost an eBay auction on a 1991 Wild Card 1000 Stripe rookie of Favre a few years ago. However, I think at least that card, and a few other top-end rookie, auto, or relic cards of Favre will be in short enough supply to keep the die-hards chasing them and values reasonably consistent.

However, anything less or more recent than that is destined for the 12 for a dollar bin, especially anything not in a Packers uni. Once he really quits the game for good, and memory can start to get warm and fuzzy on the edges with nostalgia, his Packer days will stand out.

After all, there are people like Steve following Kenny Powers, thinking that Roger Clemens and Barry Bonds are still pretty cool guys.
